Blogs for peace

Heightened levels of terrorism , panic and fear consume our t.v. news and press reports . They blame us , we blame them - they have no justification we say . They don't of course but could we have changed the trail of events ...

policy 1 .
We supported undemocratic governments , Iran , Iraq , Kuwait , Saudi Arabia to name just a few recent examples helping their leaders instil western values and govern without a mandate , so long as we can buy their oil and they won't go over to the evil commie reds .
But this creates despots or rebellion eventually .

policy 2 .
The CIA armed and trained terrorists to challenge communist leaning regimes but communism was on it's last legs anyway . Now that the freedom fighters' job is done we no longer need them and they have no part to play in governing , "sorry guys we never really intended for you to have a say" , we have our man for that role .

So Afghan rebels were trained for Assam (Osama's mentor) . Somewhere along the way they became terrorists , although they weren't doing anything different . And the problem is that terrorists talk , techniques are shared . The Afghan freedom fighters morph into Al Qaeda . We made enemies of Libya and Syria because they didn't want to play the game our way - who then help the I.R.A. in Northern Ireland and P.L.O. in Palestine, the I.R.A. help F.A.R.C. in Colombia and E.T.A. in Spain . I make no apologies for any of these groups , they murder for their own ideological reasons but once they were nothing , then they were embers . We threw petrol on them and fanned the flames . The camp fire has become a forest fire and we no longer control it .
History teaches us lessons we're told but have we learned anything ?

Iraq is an example of both these misguided policies eventually meeting on the time line with catastrophic results . I 'll end with 2 links with an Iraqi flavour .

What do you think really happened ?

Picked this up from a Digital Photography forum "DPReview" . I'll post it word for word .

I'm a night shift taxi driver. I take my camera with me everywhere. I work the late shift and have done for years. I'm pretty used to seeing weird and strange stuff and dealing with weird and strange people.

Tonight I was doing the usual ... picking people up ... dropping them off, you know, the kind of thing taxi drivers do.

Tonight, about 10:30pm in a southern suburb of Perth West Australia, I picked up a guy from a local pub and drove him the few Kms to his house, which was an address on a fairly dark and short dead-end street. He payed the fare, said thanks, then wandered up his driveway.

I turned the cab into the driveway opposite and spun it around to drive out of the street. As I took off there was a guy a few houses away standing out the front waving me down. He's about mid-20's, jeans and a light shirt. I usually wouldn't pick up from a place like that but he looked OK and didn't seem drunk or anything. So I stopped.

He opened the door, got in and said "G'day mate, to the city thanks."

I said "Sure" and started driving. I got out of the street and turned onto the main road, headed for the freeway. About a minute later I looked in the mirror but couldn't see him so I looked around and still couldn't see him.

I thought "Whats he doing?". I put the light on and looked behind ... no sign of him.

I stopped the car, got out and opened the back door. There was no one there, at all. I even checked in the boot.

I stood there looking back up the road, looking at the back seat ... looking back up the road ... etc. Now I'm thinking I imagined the whole thing. Its weirdness to the max.

I wasn't drinking, and I haven't been on drugs in many years. I've never had an hallucination and I'm a pretty down to earth kind of guy. I've never seen a ghost or aliens or other non-explainable stuff and I don't think I'm about to start believing that stuff either. But, did I imagine the whole thing? Did I fall asleep? Did the guy do a runner and I didn't notice?

If he'd got out I'd have noticed as the light comes on if the door is opened. Plus, he would have been just a few Kms from where I picked him up and since I hadn't stopped he'd have got out of a moving car. I think I'd have noticed.

Its got me stuffed! Not sure what to think now. I drove back down the street and I'll go back and look again tomorrow night but I don't know what I'd be looking for. Its weirdness is all. Strange things happen in the life of a taxi driver. I guess I'll just notch this one up on the list of strange stuff but its not the first time I've lost a customer, only the first time I've not been able to say where they went!

Will it rain , will it pour ?

Fiddling with Firefox today I contacted the Arkansas Oracle , juncquedujour , whereupon I was made aware of a Firefox add-on ( they call them extensions ) named Forecastfox .
Now , there are no prizes for guessing what this does but suffice to say it sits discretely in your browser and lets you know whether to iron your shorts soon or bring the washing in .
I've added it to the Firefox list down the page .

I've been experiencing some problems with Firefox lately , but predominantly on MSN pages . Updates from 1.04 to 1.05 to 1.06 didn't solve it . The versions immediately before 1.06 disabled some of the functionality of some of the extensions due to a security patch (I was using 20 and most were not verified as being compatible) so I backed up my profile , went through a diagnostic and finished up re-installing 1.06 from scratch which was painless . All my settings and bookmarks are still there . Seems to be a lot faster now , but obviously I couldn't leave it there , what with it working O.K. and all that so , at the risk of breaking it again tweaked some settings which should render pages faster - link also in the list .

It's going to be a roaster for me tomorow folks - 17 degrees - already stocked up with the factor 60 .

80 now , 1.3 billion later

This weekend the Chinese authorities allowed package tourists to visit the U.K. for the first time . The trip is a whistle stop 5 day tour of the U.K. starting in London and features an itinerary more akin to a business trip .
Unfortunately for these poor bastards the t.v. and press news teams have been following them around since they arrived filming them get off their coach , check in to the hotel and generally getting in their way every time they turn up somewhere to take their snaps for the folks back home .
Perhaps not a trip to to take the mistress on !

Spaces to see

It is amazing what you can find when you trawl around Spaces . My Space isn't much to write home about - I'm not trying to win the Booker prize - but I do get a laugh from some ( laughing at not with ) .
Here's 3 that don't seem to be updated so we can all safely have a peek - don't feel guilty if you find them amusing , no-one made them do it !

Spiders from Mars ?

On arriving back home last week the house seems to be full of the little buggers - various shapes and sizes , falling out of clothes , on the ceiling and the floor . I suppose it's just the time of year .
The bath-tub looked like the Battle of the Somme , a great conflagration having taken place between the spiders and moths . It's impossible to see who won but I can see there were many casualties and it looks like some lost their fight for life trying to exit the battlefield (mostly the spiders).

Free panorama making software for digital photographers

Still going through the holiday pics . Today I assembled a panorama from several shots I took out at Cape Greko between Protaras and Ayia Napa using Autostitch software ( which is free ! ) .

It does a fantastic job as long as you take the pics in a certain way .

Click on the thumbnail image to see the full pic .

You can download the full size image from there and save it to your hard drive to zoom in and have a better look at it through Windows Picture viewer or your photo software .

wtf ? what's happened to my pics ?

Just discovered my pictures in the last 3 blog entries are cropped when viewed in Internet Explorer - I use Firefox browser , and have been trying to make my space as similar as possible when viewed in both , more or less successfully .

If anyone knows why the pictures are cropped or knows a workaround please let me know .
Of course if you use Firefox you're seeing everything including the one where I'm standing naked in the corner .

update .......

Ahhhh , fixed it !

You just can't make things like this up

Of course , you could also decide to go on a boat trip . Check out the bottom half of this flyer .

Good to be back ....

Some router troubles tonight , now solved .

Anyway , not good to be back - although the temp. drop is appreciated - has been 100 degrees in Cyprus just before coming back .

Here's the very , very condensed version .
  • usual tanning failures
  • half a stone heavier
  • arms now like Popeye's from carrying mini-me
  • mosquitos and cockroaches love me

I'll pop some photos on each day as I get time . Here's one for starters .

I need a holiday

Why is it sooo bad to get back home ?

Arrived back in the early hours , got to do the inevitable and ring in to work now and discover what fuck-ups occurred in my absence .

Can't find my car keys .

I have a feeling I will be playing catch-up all day .

Will post something later and hopefully will have some photos uploaded by then .
